Islam Grows in South Africa


Once a major site for anti-apartheid struggle, South Africa’s southern township of Soweto is becoming home to a pioneering Muslim community.

In a predominantly Christian area, the recent attack on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall has reinforced stereotypes about Islam and Muslims, an image Muslims have been trying to correct for years.

Muslims make up about 1.5 percent of South Africa’s 49 million population.
