Sri Lanka whitewash Bangladesh

Sri Lanka whitewashed Bangladesh by defeating the latter by 122 runs in in third and final of three-match ODI series at the R Premadasa Stadium in on Wednesday.

Chasing target 295 runs set by Sri Lanka, Bangladesh batsmen were all out for 172 runs in 36 overs.

For Bangladesh, Soumya Sarkar scored highest 69 runs from 86 balls and Taijul Islam 39 from 28 balls.

Earlier, Sri Lanka scored 294 runs in 50 overs. 87 runs came from Angelo Mathews and 50 from Kusal Perera.

UNB adds: Bangladesh lost five wickets before posting 100 runs on the board. Tamim Iqbal continued on the bad patch as he fell prey to Kasun Rajitha scoring only two.

Anamul Haque, who got a chance for the first time in this series, managed only 14. The right-handed batsman failed to justify his inclusion in the national side.

Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman fell for 10, 4, 9 and 7 respectively. None of them were able to bring Bangladesh back in the race.

Soumya Sarkar was the only batsman to pose some obstacle for the Lankan bowlers hitting 69 off 86. And in the later order, Taijul Islam struck 39 off 28 with five fours and one six. But their effort went in vain as the team suffered a big loss.

For Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka bagged three wickets conceding 27 runs while Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara captured two each.

Earlier, Sri Lanka posted a challenging total of 294 for eight in 50 overs as Angelo Mathews (87) and Kusal Mendis (54) hit the fifties for the hosts while Dimuth Karunaratne (46), Kusal Perera (42) and Dasun Shanaka (30) also contributed with the bat.

They lost the first wicket when Shafiul Islam trapped Avishka Fernando for six.

However, the Lankans added 83 runs in the second wicket stand with the help of captain Dimuth Karunaratne and wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera.

The partnership was broken by Taijul Islam at 96 removing Karunaratne. Within two more runs, Rubel Hossain removed Perera as well.

At the end of 40 overs, Sri Lanka were 188 for three. In the last 10 overs, they added 106 runs losing five more wickets.

For Bangladesh, Shafiul Islam and Soumya Sarkar scalped three wickets each conceding 68 and 56 respectively.
